Responses of Maize (Zea mays L.) Roots to Nitrogen Heterogeneity and Intraspecific Competition: Evidence from a Pot Experiment Using the ‘Root Splitting’ Approach

چکیده

A heterogeneous distribution of nutrients in the soil and root interactions crops coexist agroecosystems. ‘root splitting’ approach, i.e., splitting system into different nutrient compartments, was used to study heterogeneity distributions interactions. We evaluated foraging behavior, individual growth, development mechanisms response nitrogen heterogeneity, intraspecific competition maize. increased precision roots at flowering mature stages (Foraging > 1), significantly biomass surface area on no high side. The had effect yield, total biomass, specific length, area, or average diameter. Intraspecific inter-crop (RII < 0) reduced plant root/shoot ratio. These results inform trait studies provide valid evidence for optimizing managing fertilizer application agroecosystems, helping maximize crop yield use efficiency.

Maize (Zea mays L.).

Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation is an effective method for introducing genes into maize. In this chapter, we describe a detailed protocol for genetic transformation of the maize genotype Hi II. Our starting plant material is immature embryos cocultivated with an Agrobacterium strain carrying a standard binary vector. In addition to step-by-step laboratory transformation proced...

Sloughing of root cap cells decreases the frictional resistance to maize (Zea mays L.) root growth

Root caps provide a protective layer in front of the meristem that protects the meristem from abrasion by soil particles. The continuous production and sloughing of the root cap cells may be an adaptation to decrease the friction at the soil-root interface by acting as a low-friction lining to the channel formed by the root. Experiments were performed which provide the first direct evidence tha...

Ethylene Evolution from Maize (Zea mays L.) Seedling Roots and Shoots in Response to Mechanical Impedance.

The effect of mechanical impedance on ethylene evolution and growth of preemergent maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings was investigated by pressurizing the growth medium in triaxial cells in a controlled environment. Pressure increased the bulk density of the medium and thus the resistance to growth. The elongation of maize primary roots and preemergent shoots was severely hindered by applied pressur...

Chilling responses of maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings: root hydraulic conductance, abscisic acid, and stomatal conductance.

Maize seedling water relations and abscisic acid (ABA) levels were measured over 24 h of root chilling (5.5 degrees C). At 2.5 h into chilling, leaf ABA levels increased by 40x and stomatal conductance (g(s)) decreased to 20% compared with prechill levels. Despite a rapid g(s) response to root chilling, leaf water potential (Psi(L)) of chilled seedlings decreased to -2.2 MPa resulting in a comp...
